In My Tribe

Awards season is upon us - yippee! I love the red carpet so...and so do lots of my girlfriends. In an effort to get some conversation going during this year's battle over best dressed for the Golden Globes, I decided to ask my tribe who they thought did it best. After all, I'm not the only one with an opinion.

Their picks:

Jessica Alba in Gucci (top vote-getter)

Salma Hayek also in Gucci

Charlize Theron in Dior

Nicole Kidman in Versace

Julianne Moore in Chanel Couture (jealous!)

Diane Lane in Elie Saab

My picks:
The aforementioned Diane Lane - how does she still look so good??

Rooney Mara in Nina Ricci (gratuitous black dress award since I looooove black dresses and French design houses)

And the eye candy award goes to Adam Levine in Tom Ford (aka God)

Thanks, ladies - appreciate you playing!

P.S. if you want a good look at a lot more dresses, Huffington Post has a nice little gallery with some of the dresses we didn't see on the tube.

40 and Fabulous?

Fabuless is more like it. I turned 40 this May, and like magic when the clock struck twelve, I became some weird, self aware, awake person. Wait a minute, I actually feel kind of like I did before I went to college!

I told you (all 24 of you dear readers) when I started this blog it would not be about me. This post is an exception and I hope it will be the only one. But, I wanted to share my plight in a public forum not only to keep myself honest as I trudge through my fourth decade on this planet, but also so that those of you who haven’t yet reached this ripe old age can learn from my mistakes. For aging wisely is also an ingredient of a fabulous, fun life.

So, why the mid-life crisis? I realized today while in the presence of some truly amazing women at BlogHer that I completely lost myself somewhere in my early 20s. How, I do not know. I was always clear about who I wanted to be and what I would be doing by now. If you’d asked me at 23 where I would be today, I would have stated definitively “living in France with my horses, dogs and sheep, doing marketing for Chanel and being a happy, fulfilled and fit me.”

What happened isn’t far off. I live in a beautiful seaside town, I have the most adorable dog, a wonderful husband, and I do marketing (ok, PR) for…a chicken company. I am also carrying around about 20 extra pounds, haven’t ridden a horse in two years and only see France in my dreams and on (very) occasional visits. Maybe I’m a little off track, but it’s not what worries me. I’m still missing something, and it isn’t the horses. Can blogging help get your groove back? For some reason, I think it can help and I’m willing to put everything I can into it to find out!

Whatcha, whatcha, whatcha want...

Someday, spring will come again. And when it does, we’ll all be cheering from the rooftops for clothes that show a little skin. In an effort to inject a little fun into spring dressing (and dreaming), here’s the upcoming season’s inspiration wish list done head to toe.

Headgear – Something creative on the head is a must. Try metallic headbands, Roman-inspired leaf vines, mini tiaras, animal ears…even funny hats, just make it different and wear with bedhead.

Bronze Harlow Leaf - $60

Face – Clean, healthy and slightly tan. Makeup should only enhance what’s natural, not mask or shade.

Coat – A super soft and lightweight leather jacket will go over everything. Make sure it fits right in the waist. Take your pick of color from black, grey and almost beige.
Funktional - $417

Tops – White with embellishments – not just your basic white shirt, the cuffs are rolled, sleeves are puffy or there is some sort of architectural cut-out.
Roberto Cavalli - $1275

Wrists – Simple leather or teeny gold bracelets layered with your watch.
Hayden Harnett - $78

Denim – Super huge this spring, lightweight denim is all over the place. My wish list item, a pair of baggy, skirt-like super short chambrays – I’m also wishing for the long, tan legs to go with this look.
Thakoon - $580

Square pants – Wear the new baggy, short pants with platforms – even maybe with pleated fronts if you’re skinny.

Toes – White tennis shoes or dark brown leather flat sandals. That’s all you need for day. Use the shoes in your closet to pair with the rest.

Chloe - $525

J Crew Converse - $65

Get It!: Splurge ($$ To Infinity and Beyond)

Holy motherlode of all that's fabulous and vintage. I got my 1stdibs e-blast this afternoon and lo and behold, they are now auctioning couture - crazy good stuff.

I priced this entry as "to infinity and beyond" because this gorgeous Dior black velvet cape is not priced on the site - which means it's so outrageously expensive that if you have to ask, you cannot afford it. But isn't it a beauty?

And, the Fifties-era Chanel necklace...the 60's Eyelash Mini...the Valentino tiger print velveteen coat. OMG.

The Hills are Alive...

With the sound of catfights! Tonight marks the official return of the fall TV season, with the season premiere of The Hills. The reality show extraordinaire should be fantastic this season, with a montage of uncomfortable silence, an ever-revolving door of LC's new boy toys, Audrina's consistently plunging necklines (and short, short, short skirts and shorts), Whitney's blooming career and Lo's new bod.

Behold the casual fashion show and the frequent Chanel handbag sightings as a strong predictor of fall trends. And, let's all cross our fingers and pray that this season marks the end of the couple who shall remain nameless (let's put their 15 minutes to rest once and for all).

Happy viewing!

Coco Would be Proud

Karl Lagerfeld and the team at Chanel continue to innovate. This time, they're crossing over into the art world with a mobile exhibit traveling globally over the next few years. The show will stop in New York's Central Park this fall.

The exhibition's web site is stunningly beautiful, with amazing photography and a mini film following the first installation in Tokyo. What an inspiration for marketers like me.
